Hearing Loss

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is a common problem caused by noise, aging, disease, and heredity. People with hearing loss may find it hard to have conversations with friends and family. They may also have trouble understanding a doctor’s advice, responding to warnings, and hearing doorbells and alarms. Hearing problems that are ignored or untreated can get worse.

Hearing loss is defined as one of three types :
  1. Conductive (involves outer or middle ear)
  2. Sensorineural (involves inner ear)
  3. Mixed (combination of the two)

Aging and chronic exposure to loud noises both contribute to hearing loss. Other factors, such as excessive earwax, can temporarily reduce how well your ears conduct sounds.

You can't reverse most types of hearing loss. However, you and your doctor or a hearing specialist can take steps to improve what you hear.
