Articulation Assessment

An articulation assessment checks how clearly a person produces speech sounds. It is carried out by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and helps decide whether unclear speech is part of normal development or needs therapy.

Articulation Assessment

What is a child speech delay evaluation?

What is an articulation test?
An articulation test, also called a pronunciation assessment, looks at how sounds are formed using the lips, tongue, teeth and palate. The SLP listens for sounds that are substituted, left out, distorted or added, such as saying "tat" for "cat". At Muskan Speech & Hearing Centre, this speech clarity test in Jalandhar is play-based for children and conversational for adults.

What does the assessment include?

  • Case history covering speech development and hearing
  • Naming pictures to check sounds at the start, middle and end of words
  • Speech in sentences, reading and conversation
  • Oral examination of the lips, tongue and jaw movement
  • Hearing screening, if needed

Who may need an articulation disorder evaluation?
  • Children whose speech is hard for others to understand
  • Children still making sound errors beyond the expected age
  • People with a lisp or other lasting sound errors
  • Adults with speech changes after injury or illness

What happens after the evaluation?
The SLP explains which sounds are affected and how they compare with age expectations. If therapy is advised, a plan is built with practice activities for home, and progress is reviewed regularly. Clear speech often builds confidence at school and at work too.
