OAE (Oto Acoustic Emissions)

OAE (Oto Acoustic Emissions) is a quick, painless test that checks how well the inner ear, called the cochlea, responds to sound. It is widely used to check the hearing of newborns.

What is the OAE test?

When the cochlea receives sound, its tiny hair cells produce a faint echo. A small probe placed at the ear opening plays soft sounds and records that echo. At Muskan Speech & Hearing Centre, the OAE test in Jalandhar is done by audiologists, and it needs no active response from the baby.

Why is a newborn hearing test in Jalandhar important?

Hearing loss can be present from birth without any visible sign. Early screening lets families act quickly, since speech and language develop fastest in the first years. Doctors generally advise screening within the first month of life.

How is the test done?

  • The baby rests quietly, often asleep or feeding.
  • A soft probe tip sits at the ear entrance.
  • Gentle sounds are played while the device records.
  • The result appears as "pass" or "refer" within minutes.
Each ear takes only a few minutes.

What does a "refer" result mean?
A refer result does not confirm hearing loss. Fluid or debris in the ear can affect it, especially in newborns. It simply means a repeat test or a detailed check, such as BERA, is needed. OAE is a screening tool, so it cannot replace a full hearing evaluation.
