Tone Decay Test (TDT)
The tone decay test (also known as the threshold tone decay test or TDT) is used to detect and measure auditory fatigue.
Tone Decay Test (TDT)
Also called an auditory fatigue test, it looks at how well the ear adapts to a continuous sound. Normally the tone stays audible. When the hearing nerve is affected, it can seem to fade within seconds. At Muskan Speech & Hearing Centre, the tone decay test in Jalandhar is performed by audiologists alongside other hearing assessments.
How is the test performed?
- Headphones are placed in a quiet, sound-treated room.
- A continuous tone is played at or just above the person's threshold.
- The person signals for as long as the tone is heard.
- If it fades, the loudness is raised by 5 dB.
- This repeats until the tone is heard for a full 60 seconds.
What do the results indicate? The amount of tone decay helps the audiologist assess auditory fatigue. Significant decay may raise concerns about auditory pathway function, including possible retrocochlear hearing loss. However, the results alone cannot confirm a diagnosis and must be interpreted alongside other hearing tests.
When is a TDT hearing test in Jalandhar advised? It may be suggested for people with:
- Hearing loss in one ear only
- Ringing in one ear
- Poor speech understanding that seems out of proportion to the hearing loss
- Unusual results in other hearing tests
