Fluency Assessment

A fluency assessment is a structured speech assessment carried out by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to evaluate how smoothly a person speaks. It identifies the presence and severity of a fluency disorder, such as stuttering, and guides the right treatment plan.

What is a fluency assessment?

A fluency assessment, also called a stammering assessment or stuttering evaluation, examines the flow, rhythm and rate of speech. It looks at repetitions, prolongations and blocks, as well as the effort and tension that may accompany them. At Muskan Speech & Hearing Centre, the assessment is individualized and based on the person's communication environment, including home, school and workplace.
Who is referred for a speech fluency test?

Children who repeat sounds or syllables, or get stuck on words
Adolescents who avoid speaking in class or social settings
Adults with long-standing stammering or sudden changes in speech
Anyone whose speech flow affects daily communication

What does the assessment include?

Case history covering onset, family history and speech development
Observation of speech in conversation, reading and picture description
Analysis of the type and frequency of disfluencies
Review of related components, such as affective, behavioral and cognitive factors
Screening of language, voice and hearing, if required

Why are emotional and behavioral factors assessed?
Fluency disorders often come with anxiety, speech avoidance or reduced confidence. Evaluating these factors alongside speech helps the SLP understand the full impact on the person, not only the visible disfluency.
What happens after the assessment?
Findings are explained clearly, and a plan for fluency disorder treatment is outlined if therapy is advised. This may include fluency-shaping techniques, stuttering modification strategies and home practice. Progress is reviewed periodically, and the plan is adjusted as speech improves
